Goshen, N.Y. (July 20, 2017)—Access Physical Therapy & Wellness, the Hudson Valley’s fastest-growing physical therapy provider, is pleased to now offer the occupational therapy Driver Off-Road Assessment (OT-DORA) in its clinics that offer occupational therapy services.
OT-DORA is a methodology of assessing an individual’s ability to drive safely. Driving is a complex activity in which the driver uses multiple cognitive, sensory and motor skills, but health declines from injury, illness or aging can impair those skills. OT-DORA allows an occupational therapist to assess an individual’s driving-related skills and abilities in a safe, off-road (clinic-based) environment, prior to taking an on-road (in-vehicle) assessment.
“Driving a car provides a person with independence,” said Cynthia Boccia, OTR/L. “DORA allows us to assess an individual’s ability to safely operate a motor vehicle and develop a program to help them regain their independence.”
OT-DORA is designed to test the abilities of those who have cognitive, sensory or musculoskeletal impairments secondary to stroke, traumatic brain injury, progressive neurodegenerative conditions or those who have concerns about their own driving skills due to advanced age.
By performing this assessment, occupational therapists are better able to develop a plan of care that identifies and addresses the source of the problem, allowing patients to regain independence.
Access Physical Therapy & Wellness has five locations through which occupational therapy services are offered: two clinics in Goshen and Monroe, and three hospital-based locations at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, St. Anthony Community Hospital Center for Physical Rehabilitation in Warwick, and Good Samaritan Hospital in Suffern which are part of Bon Secours Charity Health System, a Member of the Westchester Medical Center Health Network.
