Port Jervis PT Launches Exercise and Support Groups for People with Parkinson’s and other Movement Syndromes
LSVT BIG for Life Classes Thursdays, Weekly
Port Jervis, N.Y. (February 26, 2018)— Following a recent certification, Access Physical Therapy & Wellness’ therapist, Ellen Knapp-Hayden, PTA, started an exercise class, LSVT BIG for Life, for patients with Parkinson’s and other movement syndromes. In addition to the classes, she hosts a support group for those patients. Both the exercise class and support group meetings are held at Access’ Port Jervis clinic, located at 181 Jersey Avenue.
LSVT BIG for Life classes are held Thursdays from 1-2 p.m. and are only for patients that have completed the LSVT BIG program. Sign up in advance is required and can be done so by calling the Port Jervis clinic at (845) 858-9999. The support group is held the last Wednesday of every month from 6:30-8 p.m.
“These classes are designed to help those with Parkinson’s and other movement syndromes to keep doing their exercises after they have completed the LSVT BIG program,” said Knapp-Hayden. “A lot of people aren’t comfortable going to the gym to keep up on the exercises that propel their mobility and movement, so these classes give them an opportunity to do their exercises in a safe and comfortable space.”
Research on LSVT BIG has revealed improvement of motor functioning following treatment including: faster walking with bigger steps, improved balance, and improvements in activities of daily living.
LSVT BIG was developed upon the fundamental principles of the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT), used in helping people with Parkinson’s improve speech intelligibility and volume. The program is both standardized and individualized and focuses on movements emphasized through a specific protocol to improve daily activities.
“We also have a support group that meets once a month,” added Knapp-Hayden. “The only support group for people with Parkinson’s and other similar syndromes was in Honesdale, making it difficult for people locally to get the support they need. People in treatment for these ailments always do better when they have other people that understand them to lean on and support them. We are excited to be able to offer this group in Port Jervis to serve the surrounding area.”
The Port Jervis clinic is open Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Fridays from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Now you can make an appointment without a prescription from your physician.
